John and Janet Gless started out selling melons by the road. Today their four kids, John S., Betsy, Jeff and Jason, and several grandkids run the groves, the market and the stand.

1958
John and Janet married in 1958. He farmed melons on leased ground in El Toro, and she sold them from a trailer by the road.

1961
An Orange County farmer bet John that citrus would never grow in Woodcrest’s granite soil. John planted grove Number 1 at Iris and Gamble by himself, and won. Number 1 is still there.

1977
One cold Saturday in January, the family parked their 1974 Ford station wagon on Van Buren at grove Number 3 and sold oranges off the tailgate. The market stands on that spot today.

1978
Janet asked the kids to name the stand. At the kitchen table they came up with Gless Ranch and the two oranges, and we’ve never changed it.
Since 1993 we’ve farmed the grove at the California Citrus State Historic Park, and we look after the orange trees along Victoria Avenue. Next, we’re planting a new avocado grove to help bring back the greenbelt.
In 2024 the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce named John and Janet Gless Citizens of the Year.

Orchard care
We’ve planted and cared for groves for landowners and investors since 1963, when Orange County investors saw our groves thriving and asked John to farm theirs.
